An Amazing Story

Today's Yahoo! News

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - An infant, named Grace, who underwent the world's first heart "stent" procedure in the womb was discharged to go home on Friday, according to a press release from Children's Hospital Boston, the center where the landmark operation took place.

The stent was placed in the developing fetus at 30 weeks of pregnancy on November 7, 2005 to treat a heart defect called hypoplastic left heart syndrome (HLHS). She was born January 10 and underwent the first part of a definitive three-stage corrective operation on January 13. The physicians credit the earlier stent placement with protecting her lungs and making her recent operation run more smoothly than usual for these types of cases.

With HLHS, the most common heart disease-related cause of death during the first week of life, the left side of the heart is underdeveloped and can accept very little blood. Frequently, there is a hole that lets blood from the left side flow to the right before leaving the heart. In Grace's case, however, there wasn't a hole, so blood accumulated on the left side and backed up into her lungs, which over time can cause serious damage.

To prevent the lung damage that would occur as the pregnancy went on, Dr. James Lock, from Children's Hospital Boston, and colleagues decided to create a connection between the left and right sides of Grace's heart using a stent, which acted like a tiny channel for the blood.

Under ultrasound guidance, the doctors inserted a small catheter into the mother's abdomen and uterus and then into the fetal heart. After two holes were created in the wall between the left and right sides of the heart, the stent was placed.

After several uneventful weeks, the mother returned to the hospital in January for delivery. An ultrasound performed just before birth suggested that the stent procedure had worked: Grace looked like a typical HLHS baby, instead of one in the highest risk category as would have been expected without treatment. At birth, Grace was breathing without major difficulty and did not need to be put on a mechanical ventilator.

When the first stage of the definitive corrective procedure was performed a few days later, Grace's recovery was described as "extraordinarily smooth -- a course unlike any other baby with HLHS and an intact" wall between the left and right sides of the heart.

The second stage of the operation will take place at 4 to 6 months of age and the third and final stage is usually performed between 1 and 3 years of age.

Big day

We had a great day yesterday. Lunch at the hall and we ended up staying till after 3pm!
After that Justin and Jazmin went for a walk along the beach.

We went to McDonald's for supper: I think we are raising a good little consumer!

AND it's only TOAST she's eating, not a toasted sandwhich.

This was taken this afternoon.

Australia Day celebrations

Swamp Macquarie council organised the celebrations for Australia Day at Speers Point. After shopping in the morning, we went up there for the afternoon.

There were several thousand people there with stalls, carnival rides and food stands set up in the park. There is a company called OzClimb that runs a portable climbing wall, but the belay is a mechanical one - some kind of bellows system like a reverse bungee. It looked safe enough, but I'm just not comfortable trusting my life to a belay I can't see so we gave it a miss.

At about 7.00 Daryl Braithwaite performed for an hour or so, which really got the crowd going. He did oldies like "rise"& "howzat" and newer ones like "One Summer".

That went until about 8.00 and after that Marcia Hines was on, but we decided to give her a miss and get Jaz home to bed.

After a quick skate at a new skatepark in Eleebana we got home about 9.00 and had an early night.

Australia Day!

A warm but rainy day!!

We went and did the grocery shopping this morning at Tuggerah Westfields. It was a bit quiteter than usual, being a public holiday, but not much.

My great uncle Ray got an Order of Australia, General Division, Service to the community award. The paper lists him as:
Dr Raymond John King, Wagga Wagga NSW.
Mental Health and suicide prevention, programs to assist older men.

I thought that was kinda cool.

Lots of pics

Haven't been doing all that much the last couple of days, just trying to stay on top of things.

I finally got round to cleaning out the kitchen drawers and Jazmin loves playing with the utensils.

Justin has an appointment at Tuggerah on Wednesday.

We are thinking we might go to the Australia Day celebrations at Speers Point.

Jazmin is getting much better with her sippy cup.

No Pics

Seems I haven't taken any pics in the last few day. I'll try and get some good ones up over the weekend.

Congratulations to Naomi & Jason who were to be married today in New Zealand!

Bit of a laugh!

Now that food has replaced sex in my life, I can't even get into my own pants.

Marriage changes passion. Suddenly you're in bed with a relative.

I saw a woman wearing a sweat shirt with "Guess" on it. So I said "Implants?" She hit me.

I signed up for an exercise class and was told to wear loose-fitting clothing. If I HAD any loose-fitting clothing, I wouldn't have signed up in the first place!

When I was young we used to go "skinny dipping." Now I just "chunky dunk."

Don't argue with an idiot; people watching may not be able to tell the difference.

Wouldn't it be nice if, whenever we messed up our life we could simply press 'Ctrl Alt Delete' and start all over?

Brain cells come and brain cells go, but FAT cells live forever.

Spitting Chips

Since this is my blog I and I can say whatever I want, I'me just gunna say it.
DoCS is STUPID!!!! That's the Department of Children's Services for those that don't know. Earlier this week I was on their website checking out the requirements to become a foster parent. I met a significant amount of the criteria, but Jazmin is too young (youngest child has to be at least 2) and I am WAY too young. Both applicants have a certain age. Anyway, my issue is that I saw on TV on Tuesday night a thing from DoCS saying that they have a dire shortage of foster carers!! I think they should look at each prospective foster parent's situation and they might find a lot more! Of course there should be basic criteria, like having no criminal record, but it just seems nuts that they have things that don't really matter like age, and scream on TV that there's no-one to look after these poor kids that can't live with their parents.

Last night there was yelling, shouting and shoving for a good couple of hours at the house across the road from us. From about 11pm - 1am I was trying to get to sleep and felt like doing some shouting myself: to tell them to SHUT UP!!!

Jaz has been a grump a bit today, she doesn't want to go to sleep, but she doesn't seem to want to stay up either!

Managed to get the stuff on the line dry and brought in. Nice to finally have some clothes in our drawers!

Fairly busy day today, been doing lots of housework and looking after Jazmin can be a big job sometimes!

Still Raining!!!!

Well it's still raining heavily and our back yard looks like a jungle. It's been good for the dams though - finally they've got some in the Warragamba Dam, so I'm sure that will help out the Sydney supply somewhat.

I've been invited to Sarah Wallace's baby shower on Saturday afternoon. I think I'll go, but I have yet to decide as I still have a lot of issues regarding pregnancy in general, and don't want to turn into a sobbing mess. Unfortunately that may be likely to happen. I don't have to RSVP or anything, so I'll see how I feel come Saturday.

Jazmin is learning to squeal and is making all sorts of noises now from chatty tones to ear-splitting high pitched squeals and a new deep "oh" shound she's just discovered. It's so much fun listening to her.

She's figured out how to rip up the tabs on her nappies too now, which proves a challenge. Not so much so when we're taking one off, but when the new one's on she plays with the tabs. She rolls over all the time on the change mat, and Justin has managed to figure out how to put a nappy on while she's on her front - a skill I have yet to master!

Product recommendations

I've come across some really good products lately and wanted to share them.

- Difflam Forte Sore Throat Spray
- ALDI - LOGIX Dishwasher tablets. Much to my surprise they are as good as Finish Powerball 4-in-1, and significantly cheaper.
- The age-old Tea Tree Oil. I love it because it is very multi-purpose. Can be used for: Scratches, cuts, skin infections, bites, stings, acne (I'm using it for this!) It can also be used for tinea and cold sores. It can help relieve a sore throat, and a chesty cough. Can also be used as a disinfectant. Coles sells it for about $4-ish for a 200ml bottle and that generally lasts quite a while.

And, one product I found wasn't as good was the Huggies Ultra-Sensitive Wipes. I'll be going back to their regular unscented line.

Picture Perfect Princess

We did end up going for a swim last night. We had the pool almost all to ourselves. It tired Jazmin out so much that she didn't have her bedtime bottle, and she slept till after 9am this morning, which was a great sleep in for me.

It's still raining sporadically....it stops then starts again with not enough time to get the washing dry! Ive hung today's load up on the racks and strung some line out on the verandah. Sure it doesn't look like a class act, but at least Jazmin will have something clean to wear!

Jazmin loved playing in the washing basket this morning - kept her occupied for hours! I think she liked it that her toys couldn't get away from her!

Rushed off my feet!

Got the car back from the repairer today. Looks like new and clean too - ha ha ha!

Jazmin had her check up today.
We're going for a swim at Mingara tonight. The sun has finally come out, some of the washing was dry and it's HOT!

Congrats to Ev and Jesse - they got engaged last Friday!

Monster Skate

A new skate facility has been built at the Homebush Olympic site. This includes a 1,000 sq m street course for those who don't shave yet, and 2 ramps for the real men. You can have a look at www.monsterpark.com.au but all you really need to know is the half pipe is the largest in Australia. At 14 feet high with 2 feet of vert, it dwarfs even the Fairfield steel monster we grew up skating. This truly is an olympic ramp ready for when they replace something like synchronised swimming with a vastly more popular olympic sport, skateboarding.

Until recently, I have never dropped in on a vert ramp. They dismantled the Fairfield monster before I could screw up the courage to try it. Just before xmas I went to Perth for work and dropped in on the Leederville vert ramp, but it is a baby, merely 9 feet high with 1 foot of vert. Still, step by step we grow towards the light, and the light is Monster.

Last Monday night was the 3rd anniversary of our friend and mentor John Findlay departing the troubles of this life, and the consensus was that we should all turn up, wearing loud/ugly shirts and have a skate for Fin. All the old crew were there: Adam Luxford, Paul the rollerskate guy, Michael Mulhall (who works at Monster) and a few older guys who I didn't recognise. Many of these people brought wives and kids with them and it was a really positive vibe all round.

So, Justy steps up with trembling knees and drops in on this monster ramp, travelling faster than I have ever gone in my life. What a rush! Kickturn in the vert, then pump and kickturn again. Several runs I had, interspersed with Mulhall doing 4 foot backside airs and tailslides on the 18 foot extension (have to be seen to be believed). There was another guy there a bit more experienced than me, dropping in and trying to land backside airs. Hopefully I will be at that stage shortly, but quite happy at doing better at 29 than I was at 17 years of age.

After about 2 hours I dropped in and something went awry. I don't remember what happened, all I know is I dropped in and then opened my eyes to see 2 guys leaning over me saying "are you OK?" They helped drag my carcass off the ramp and into a bean bag where I had a bit of a recovery for 10 minutes or so. Turns out I was out cold for about 30 seconds and docile for 5 minutes or so. You can see in the photo how skewed my helmet is, seems I fell 13 feet and landed on my left hand side. My knee, hip and shoulder were sore, and my love luggage was scraped by my shirt or the surface of the ramp.

Can't leave on a bad note, gotta climb back on the horse so I climbed back up the stairs and dropped in again a couple of times, and actually had better runs, smoother turns than before. All the other guys were holding their breath, hoping I was OK. I was pretty tired after that so I left, caught the train home and got into bed about 11.30pm, but all in all had a great time. I will be back to skate that monster ramp again.

A week has passed and my hip has a yellow bruise about the size of my palm. Knee still a bit sore and the love luggage is scabbing up nicely. My shoulder/delt/trap is the worst but I think that's mainly because I sleep on it funny. I'm getting better but it takes time at this age.

Saturated Sunday

Was a beautiful day yesterday, we hung about 4 loads of washing out...and then it rained! It has been raining all day and just generally damp and drizzly and gloomy.

Went to Gosford as per usual today, then went to Tuggerah for a bite to eat and a bit of shopping. We went for a drive down to Budgewoi, and The Entrance just for a change.

Watched "Gladiatress" last night, which as you can guess is a pay-out of "Gladiator". It's pretty funny, I'd give it a 6/10. "Does my gluteus maximus look big in this?"

Busy Day

Yesterday we were out all day! Jazmin is still asleep.
Picture was taken last night.

We dropped James at Newcastle Airport, came home, went and did the grocery shopping at Tuggerah, then went out to Lake Haven in the night.

While we were at the airport, the airforce was doing training, so we got to see some cadets and awesome fighter planes. The planes were very loud, so I covered Jazmin's ears, but it didn't seem to bother her too much
.

She played on the floor for a bit, as we got there quite a while before James' plane was due to leave. A couple of people were talking to us about how cute she was and how it looked like it wouldn't be long till she was crawling. Just this week she's figured out how to open the cupboard doors on our TV unit! Anyway that was nice.

James got home ok, and we enjoyed having him here.

Murray wants to come down for his birthday in March - but we might make it Easter school holidays. James got to come down for his 12th birthday, so now it's Murray's turn. No hard plans as yet though.

I was amazed at how quiet it was at Lake Haven - we even got a "parents with prams" park - which is unusual. We think everyone is probably still suffering from the post-Christmas debt hangover!!

I got a new dinner set, it's nothing special but we always seem to be short on bowls. I have had my eye on it for a while and it has gone right down to $10.00 and it was the last one so thought I'd snap it up.

I got Enid Blyton's "Enchanted Wood & Magic Faraway Tree" book out of the library to read again. I loved that story and used to own it when I was little. I think I might have decided I had outgrown it, and left the book in New Zealand, but I think we'll have to invest in it when Jazmin gets a bit older.

I bought "The little Red Caboose" for Jazmin yesterday. Justin and I both had this book when we were kids and loved it. We've decided that since Jazmin will have no interest in it at the moment (other than to eat it and scrunch up the pages!) , we'll give it to her for her birthday.

Yet another picture of the princess

Picture perfect "Kodak Moment" Daddy smiles as Jazmin spews on him!!!

Sunday

We went to Gosford as usual. We were going to go abseiling but still too wet.

We went to Maccas/Coolabah Tree Cafe (F3) for lunch.

We came home and had a bit of a snooze, and then went to Mingara, only to find the pool was closing in less than 15 minutes! So we went round to Shelley Beach and Justin and James went for a walk along the beach.

After that we went to Black Stump Erina for dinner. A good day despite it not going to plan.

Justin is going to a memorial for some skater guy tonight at the Homebush Monster Skate Ramp, so he'll be home pretty late. Glad I have James to keep me company!

Afternoon Outing

We went out to Shonelle's Cafe at Budgewoi for afternoon tea.

After that we went for a walk around the cemetery. Kind of morbid, but also interesting to see the kind of things that are written on the tombstones. Some of the people there were over 100 years old! It wore Jazmin out, and I think she enjoyed the ride in the pram.

We went to Budgewoi Soccer Club for dinner - or so we thought. Turns out they don't have a bistro, so we went to Wyong Leagues and had a nice tea there instead.

I finally got around to cleaning out the linen cupboard and the top of Jazmin's cupboard tonight. I have been meaning to do it for months now. I have put the cot sheets in her room now as they were getting mixed up with ours. I'm not sure how much of a Queen bed that a cot sheet would cover! We'll see how long it takes for me to get round to doing the kitchen drawers!

Cut and Dyed

We cut and coloured James' hair today. It's now a bizzare shade of green and a touch of blue.

It's Raining!

When it rains, it pours! 2 days of rain so far. We were meant to be going abseiling today, but we can't, it would be too slippery and dangerous with wet equipment.

James and I went to see "The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe" last night at the movies. It was quite good, but we felt it had a rather distinct "Lord of the Rings" feel to it.

Jazmin can sit up properly now for a long time. She's doing well with her eating.
Justin went back to work this week. It's been OK - a bit quiet, but he's now heading into the busy time of year, so I think this is the calm before the storm.

We still haven't got our car back from the repairer - at this stage we have no idea when it'll be fixed. The Courtesy car:
